In the autumn 2002 we were living in a small blue house in Vevendelvegen on the west coast of Norway in Volda. Researching subjects connected to our studies at Dartington College of Arts.

The Furniture, typewriters, Dansette record players, untuned piano, Hawaiian pictures on the walls, furs and clothes in the closet, mirrored a complete scenery of the 50´s. A site specific from which the creation of our alter egos GilbertandGrape appeared.

GilbertandGrape found pictures taken 40 years previously in the house we were now living in. Pictures of two women, both with black hair always smiling and always posing, posing, posing. Working from a visual recreation of the found pictures we created a text generating method that would exemplify the use of translation.

GilbertandGrape posed in the bath, using our collage of visual and cultural memories to inform our actions. Playing with an entwined web of cultural references, exploring the idea of the everyday.

he two characters formed an odd sisterhood in the black wigs, text and photos raising questions about the feminine and translation.

In retrospect we saw the possibility of our recreation to comment/claim authorship of our own image. In our work we have continued by exploring something exaggerated feminine, a burlesque paradox, a collage lacking in clarity, a chaotic response. The performance bath, office became a response and a re-reading rather than a re-writing.Wearing plastic curlers as a repetition of a memory, a repetition slightly altered.

For the performance `Bath, Office´we installed a peeping hole in two doors at Vevendelvegen and allowed an audience too witness our actions in this site specific performance for a period of three days.
