PETER ATHA (UK):

I wanted to write cos i wanted to say strange things to the world in order to make you look up, or make you perk up or buck up or reach down/out/in. I would show closed-cupped hands and then open them slightly so people could glimpse in - and then I would leave (without the hands) and then whatever those you people did - walk away or stand and watch or want to crawl inside was both to do with me and not to do with me. My practice has breached ‘writer’:- I reached the end of a page, scribbled PTO, turned that page and I now I put out forms that don't necessarily go through my hand and out my pen: the interdisciplinary pop-up non-page of my current practice. Outside this non-page is a series of spinning tops - one for narrative form - two for reader/viewer, three for language, four for me (for what i want to say or for why I write, or say things), five for political or social statement, six for amusement etc etc etc – I bounce off those tops and create my work within the boundaries of the ‘book I have always written in’ but the form may be; video, film, installation, sculpture, book, object, text or image. And if I look at my hands they both cupped and open, and in my writing hand there is often a pen.
